For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.
Hebrews 12:10-13 NLT
I am in a season of discipline and like growing pains bring an increase – discipline allows us to shed the weight of the heavy burdens from this world and relinquish control to our Heavenly Father. I’ve been so wrong, I earnestly thought I was seeking God – but I’m afraid I was seeking what God could do for me. I actually wrote the above scripture for my ‘Pre-Run prayer’ and I guess God was just getting me prepared by sharing scriptures I related to my training, to show me that this discipline is not just for my running – but for my whole life.
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].
2 Timothy 1:7 AMP
God’s last direction for my life was to raise our sons as the men of God, that they were created to be. God also recently reminded me that anything that isn’t a tool for this purpose, is a distraction, and needs to be removed from my life. I’m seeing things in a new light, I know the discipline is coming, and I’m not worried.
…be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:1b
Your strength comes from God’s grace…
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength
I can not do what needs to be done, on my own strength, but I can accept the discipline that’s before me with God’s grace – given to me by His Son Christ Jesus. Our Heavenly Father knows before we even make mistakes, that we’re going to make them, but yet His plan from the Beginning was to send Jesus to correct the sins of Adam. Before we’d ever come to Him and repent of our sins, and seek His forgiveness, God had prepared a way to Him. This was huge for me – so many times I would beat myself up with guilt for sins, especially repeated sins, but then the light went on, God says we’re not perfect, not one of us, when we do sin, ask forgiveness, and don’t sin again – His mercies are new every day. The enemy is looking for ways to beat us down, so he is going to keep reminding us of those past sins, even after God’s already forgotten them, they are as far as the east is as from the west – so we need to just receive that grace and strength God has for us, allow it to cover us – His blood makes us white as snow.
Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].
Romans 8:1 AMP
